هو تقريرٌ مرفوعٌ إلى الأمير فيليب، كتبه راهبٌ كان هو نفسه صاحب «إنكوميندا» قبل أن يغيّر حياته، ويمضي فيه جزيرةً جزيرة وإقليمًا إقليمًا يروي المذابح بالأسماء والأعداد والأساليب. والأعداد مبالغٌ فيها على الأرجح، وقد ظلّ المؤرّخون يتجادلون فيها قرونًا؛ أمّا ما لم يُنقَض قطّ فهو الوقائع. وكان للنصّ أثران متعاكسان: ففي إسبانيا أعان على إقرار «القوانين الجديدة»، وفي الخارج، إذ تُرجم من فوره إلى الهولنديّة والإنجليزيّة والفرنسيّة مع منقوشاتٍ مروّعة، خدم أعداء التاج في بناء ما سُمّي بعدُ «الأسطورة السوداء». وحقُّه أن يُقرأ مع العلم بالأمرين معًا: فهو دعايةٌ وهو شهادة، ولا يبطل أحدهما بكونه الآخر.
