الثاني من مجلّدات أربعة تضمّ أعمال هيوم الفلسفية في طبعة غرين وغروز: تتمّة «رسالة في الطبيعة البشرية».
السياق والتاريخ
طبعة غرين وغروز، 1874-75، في أربعة مجلّدات، وفي الفهرس منها الأول والثاني. وهذان يضمّان «رسالةً في الطبيعة البشرية»، التي نشرها هيوم وهو ابن ثمانٍ وعشرين، والتي — على حدّ قوله — «سقطت من المطبعة ميتة». وفيها كل شيء: أن الأفكار جميعًا صادرةٌ عن الانطباعات؛ وتحليلُ السببية — فنحن لا نلاحظ رابطةً ضرورية، بل اقترانًا مطّردًا تُعلّمنا العادةُ أن نتوقّعه؛ والهجومُ على مفهوم الأنا بوصفه جوهرًا؛ والتمييزُ بين ما هو كائن وما ينبغي أن يكون، وقد نظّم قرنين من الجدل الأخلاقي. أما المجلّدان الثالث والرابع فيضمّان المقالات و«المباحث»، وهي إعادة صياغةٍ متأخّرة وأيسر قراءةً للشيء نفسه، وهذان المجلّدان ليسا في الفهرس، لكنّ «المبحثين» و«المقالات» موجودة فيه أعمالًا مستقلّة.
