العنوان يقول ذلك، لكن يحسن التأكيد: هذا قطعة لا عمل. وفي الفهرس أيضًا المجلد الأول كاملًا من طبعة أخرى، والاثنان يتداخلان. وسبب ذلك أن المصادر الرقمية قسّمت النصّ بطرائق مختلفة. و«تاريخ» هيوم عمل متّصل يمتدّ من الغزو الروماني إلى سنة 1688؛ فمن طلب شيئًا بعينه فالأولى أن يبدأ من مدخل المجلد الكامل، وأن يستشهد دائمًا بالعهد والفصل.
