السياق والتاريخ
و«Minute philosopher» تعريضٌ: هم الذين يصغّرون الأمور الكبار. والمحاوران، ألكيفرون وليسيكليس، يحملان مذهبَي شافتسبري ومانديڤيل، وبَركلي يردّ عليهما واحدًا واحدًا. ويتضمّن الحوار الرابع أشهر حججه، حجّة اللغة البصرية: أن تُبصر معناه أن تؤوّل علاماتٍ لا تشبه ما تدلّ عليه، كما لا تشبهه الألفاظ؛ فالطبيعة كلّها إذن خطاب. أما السابع فنظريةٌ في المعنى سبقت القرن العشرين بكثير: فثمّة ألفاظٌ لا تعمل باستحضار الأفكار بل بضبط السلوك. وقد كُتب في رود آيلاند، وهو ينتظر مالًا لم يصل قطّ لتأسيس كلّية في برمودا.

The reafoning is clear, found, and conclufive ; and has never been anfwered. The characters of the difputants are well chofen, and ably fupported ; and their converfation is fpirited and natural.
