الكتاب المؤسِّس للنفعية: تُقاس الأخلاق والقوانين بمقياس واحد لا غير، هو مقدار ما تُحدثه من سعادة وألم.
السياق والتاريخ
طُبع سنة 1780 ونُشر سنة 1789. يفتتحه القول بأن الطبيعة وضعت الإنسان تحت سيّدين مسيطرين، هما الألم واللذة، ومن ذلك يتفرّع الباقي كلّه: حساب السعادة الذي يزن الشدّة والمدّة واليقين والسَّعة؛ وتصنيف الجرائم؛ والقاعدة القائلة إن العقوبة لا تُبرَّر إلا حيث تدفع من الشرّ أكثر مما تُنزل. أما الحاشية المتعلقة بالحيوان — فليس السؤال أتَعقِل أم لا، ولا أتنطق أم لا، بل أتتألّم أم لا — فمنها ينطلق الجدل الأخلاقي الحديث حول الحيوان. ومن هذا الكتاب خرج مِل، ثم فارقه.
