السياق والتاريخ
يوميات ثورو هي عمله الحقيقي، وقليلون جدًا يعلمون ذلك. دوّنها أربعًا وعشرين سنة، من العشرين حتى قُبيل وفاته، وتبلغ نحو مليونَي كلمة: أكثر من عشرة أضعاف كل ما نشره في حياته. وليست يومياتٍ حميمة ولا دفتر خواطر: بل سجلٌّ يوميٌّ لما كان يراه — في أيّ يومٍ أزهر كل نبت، ومتى تجمّدت البركة، وأيّ طائرٍ عاد ومتى — ممزوجًا بتفكيرٍ فلسفي وبصفحاتٍ من النثر هي من أجود ما كتب. ومن هنا خرجت كتبه؛ وهذه هي المادة التي «ڤالدن» تقطيرٌ لها. أما ما دوّنه عقودًا من بيانات النبات والجليد فيُستعمل اليوم لقياس تغيّر المناخ، وذلك ما لم يكن في وسعه أن يتوقّعه. تنبيه: في الفهرس مجلّدان من اليوميات، لا اليوميات كلّها.
