Context i història
Plutarc les va escriure a principis del segle II i avisa que no fa història sinó vides: diu que un gest petit o una frase revelen el caràcter més que no pas una batalla amb milers de morts. Per la traducció anglesa de North van arribar a Shakespeare, que en va treure el Juli Cèsar, el Coriolà i l'Antoni i Cleòpatra gairebé escena per escena.
