Convida a la comparació directa amb el «Banquet» de Plató, que tracta la mateixa escena i el mateix tema: aquí l'ambient és més domèstic i hi ha més broma, i l'amor que s'hi defensa és menys ascendent i més humà. Tenir tots dos al catàleg és el que fa visible la diferència entre els dos deixebles.
