La prima parte dell'Avesta nei «Sacred Books of the East»: il Vendidad, il codice di purità e di purificazione dello zoroastrismo.
Contesto e storia
È la parte dell'Avesta che meno somiglia a un libro religioso quale se lo figura un lettore moderno, e conviene dirlo. Il Vendidad — «legge contro i demoni» — è soprattutto un trattato giuridico e rituale: quali contatti contaminino, come si debba trattare un cadavere, quale pena spetti a ciascuna colpa, come si purifichino la terra, l'acqua e il fuoco, come si debba curare un cane. Il suo interesse è duplice: è un documento giuridico e sociale dell'Iran antico di straordinario dettaglio, e spiega pratiche zoroastriane tuttora esistenti. Il nucleo antico e religiosamente centrale dell'Avesta sono le Gatha, che stanno nella terza parte. La traduzione è di Darmesteter, del 1880.
