Il «Libro dei morti» egizio nella versione del papiro di Ani, del XIII secolo a.C.: l'insieme delle formule che dovevano accompagnare il defunto per l'altro mondo.
Contesto e storia
Il titolo è di egittologi moderni; gli Egizi lo chiamavano «Libro dell'uscita al giorno». Non è un libro unico né una scrittura sacra dal testo fissato, ma un repertorio di duecento e più capitoli dei quali ogni papiro copia una scelta, commissionata e pagata secondo i mezzi del defunto. Quello di Ani, scriba di Tebe, è fra i più lunghi e meglio illustrati che si conservino. Il capitolo centrale è il 125, il giudizio: il cuore del morto è pesato contro la piuma di Maat, e lì il defunto recita la «confessione negativa», l'elenco di ciò che non ha fatto. La traduzione di Wallis Budge, del 1895, è quella che diffuse il testo in occidente ed è assai superata: vale come documento storico della sua epoca, non come lettura filologica odierna.
