Contesto e storia

Il libro va dal diritto astratto — io e una cosa mia — alla moralità soggettiva, e di lì all'eticità (Sittlichkeit), dove la libertà non è più un'esigenza ma un modo di vivere istituito. La parte sulla società civile è quella in cui Hegel constata che il mercato, lasciato a sé, produce insieme ricchezza e miseria, e non sa risolverlo: uno dei luoghi dove Marx andò a cercare. La prefazione contiene le due frasi più citate e più discusse: quella del razionale e del reale, e quella della nottola di Minerva che spicca il volo sul far della sera. Alcuni lettori vi hanno visto una giustificazione dello Stato prussiano e altri il contrario; conviene leggerlo senza il riassunto.
