Contesto e storia
«Minute philosopher» è una frecciata: quelli che rimpiccioliscono le cose grandi. Gli interlocutori, Alcifrone e Lisicle, sostengono le posizioni di Shaftesbury e di Mandeville, e Berkeley risponde loro una a una. Il quarto dialogo contiene il suo argomento più noto, quello del linguaggio visivo: vedere è interpretare segni che non somigliano a ciò che significano, come non vi somigliano le parole, sicché la natura intera è un discorso. Il settimo è una teoria del significato assai in anticipo sul Novecento: certe parole non operano evocando idee, ma regolando la condotta. Fu scritto nel Rhode Island, mentre aspettava un denaro che non giunse mai per fondare un collegio alle Bermuda.

The Minute Philofopher coniifls of a feries of dialogues, involving moil of the important topics in the debate between Chriftians and Infidels ; the principal arguments by which Chriftianity is defended, and the principal objections with which it has been oppoi'ed. The reafoning is clear, found, and conclufive ; and has never been anfwered. The characters of the difputants are well chofen, and ably fupported ; and their converfation is fpirited and natural.
