Contesto e storia
Il titolo francese è «Matière et mémoire». La strategia è accorta: invece di discutere in astratto se lo spirito sia materiale, Bergson prende il fenomeno in cui il problema si tocca con un dito, e distingue due memorie che di solito si confondono. L'una è l'abitudine — sapere una lezione a memoria, che è una disposizione del corpo —; l'altra è il ricordo di un momento unico e datato, che non si immagazzina nel cervello come una pratica. Di qui la sua tesi che il cervello non contiene i ricordi ma li sceglie per l'azione presente. L'immagine del cono rovesciato, in cui tutto il passato si contrae verso la punta del presente, è fra le più citate della filosofia moderna.
