Uscito fra il 1864 e il 1867. Qui compare per la prima volta l'espressione «survival of the fittest», che Spencer coniò dopo aver letto Darwin. Darwin finì per adottarla nella quinta edizione dell'Origine delle specie, e da allora la si attribuisce a lui; è di Spencer. Il resto del libro dipende da un meccanismo di eredità che si sarebbe rivelato falso, e per questo si legge più come documento che come biologia.
