Contesto e storia
Conviene saperlo prima di citare. I «Saggi» sono tre libri e più di cento capitoli, che Montaigne andò riscrivendo e ampliando per vent'anni, e ciò che è qui è una scelta fatta da un curatore per una collana di classici universali. Ciò detto, quel che si legge è Montaigne, e Montaigne è l'uomo che inventò un modo di scrivere: prendere sé stesso a oggetto di studio senza pretendere di ricavarne una dottrina, cambiare parere entro una stessa pagina e lasciarvi entrambe le versioni, e chiudere ogni argomento confessando di non saperne abbastanza. La sua domanda — «che so io?» — conduce a uno scetticismo che non paralizza ma insegna a vivere. Se si vuol citare Montaigne, conviene cercare un'edizione completa e indicare libro e capitolo.
