Contesto e storia
È il secondo libro più antico conservato del Giappone e il primo delle sei storie ufficiali. Fu compilato per ordine della corte e scritto in cinese classico, la lingua colta dell'epoca, il che già dice per chi lo si faceva. I primi libri sono mitologici e gli ultimi annalistici: più ci si avvicina al tempo della redazione, più il testo si può riscontrare con altre fonti. Va letto sapendo che è una storia ufficiale, fatta per legittimare una dinastia, e che la sua cronologia antica non è attendibile.
