Il volume gemello del precedente, del 1788: se quello trattava del conoscere, questo tratta dell'operare, ed è qui che Reid espone la sua teoria della libertà e della morale.
Contesto e storia
L'argomento centrale sulla libertà è quello della causalità dell'agente: un'azione non è causata da un desiderio anteriore come una palla ne urta un'altra; c'è un agente che la causa, e questo è un modo di causare diverso da quello fisico. Reid sostiene che senza ciò non ha senso ritenere alcuno responsabile. La parte morale sostiene che i principi del dovere sono evidenti di per sé, come lo sono quelli del senso comune nella conoscenza, e si oppone espressamente a Hume: la ragione non è schiava delle passioni, e ciò che è bene non è ciò che ci piace. I due volumi di Reid furono scritti per stare insieme, e leggerne uno solo è vederne appena la metà.
