Contesto e storia
Servono la data e il contesto. Voltaire non conosceva l'islam di prima mano, e il Maometto di questo dramma non è una figura storica ma un personaggio da scena: un impostore che manipola la fede altrui per il proprio potere. L'intenzione dichiarata era un'altra — Voltaire dedicò il dramma a **papa Benedetto XIV**, e i contemporanei capirono subito che il bersaglio vero era il fanatismo cristiano, che non poteva attaccare per nome senza finire in carcere. Lo si legge così dal Settecento, e lo si legge anche per quel che dice alla lettera, cosa che offende molti musulmani. Meglio avere in mano tutte e due le letture che nessuna delle due.
