السياق والتاريخ
هو العمل نفسه الذي يَرِد في الفهرس أيضًا باسم «رحلة البيغل»، ويجدر قول ذلك لئلا يُظنّ أن داروين كتب كتابين. بهذا الاسم صدر أول مرة؛ أما اسم «الرحلة» فغلب فيما بعد. الطبعة الأولى سنة 1839، والثانية سنة 1845 أُعيدت كتابتها في مواضع مهمّة. وكل استشهاد يجب أن يذكر الطبعة المستعملة، لأن الطبعتين لا تقولان الشيء نفسه.

This second edition is dedicated with grateful pleasure, as an acknowledgment that the chief part of whatever scientific merit this journal and the other works of the author may possess, has been derived from studying the well-known and admirable PRINCIPLES OF GEOLOGY.
