جواب يامبليخوس على رسالةٍ من فرفوريوس يسأل فيها، متشكّكًا: لماذا يمارس الفيلسوف الطقوس؟ وهو أوفى دفاعٍ عن «الثيورجيا» بقي إلينا.
السياق والتاريخ
كان فرفوريوس قد أورد اعتراضاتٍ وجيهة: إن كانت الآلهة لا تنفعل، فبمَ يحرّكها الدعاء؟ وإن كانت خيّرة، فبمَ يُلزمها طقس؟ فيُجيب يامبليخوس بأن الخلل في المقدّمة: فالثيورجيا لا تعمل لأن الفيلسوف فهم شيئًا، بل لأن الطقوس علاماتٌ وضعتها الآلهة نفسها، وهي تفعل وإن جهل مؤدّيها العلّة. وبهذا يفصل الخلاص عن الفهم، ويفتح الأفلاطونية المحدثة على الممارسة الدينية. وهو النصّ الذي حدّد الأفلاطونية المحدثة اللاحقة، وبروكلوس منها، والذي اتّخذه يوليانوس «المرتدّ» أساسًا لمحاولته إحياء الوثنية. أما العنوان فمن وضع ناشرٍ في عصر النهضة؛ لم يضعه يامبليخوس.
