كتاب سنة 1916 الذي يذهب فيه ديوي إلى أن الديمقراطية ليست أولًا شكلًا من أشكال الحكم، بل طريقةً في العيش المشترك، وأن المدرسة هي حيث يُتعلَّم ذلك أو لا يُتعلَّم.
السياق والتاريخ
والحجّة: ليس التعليم نقل مخزون من المعارف إلى متلقٍّ ساكن، بل تنظيم التجربة على نحوٍ يضطرّ معه المتعلّم إلى أن يفعل ويجرّب ويصحّح. وعلى المنوال نفسه، يكون المجتمع ديمقراطيًا بمقدار ما يشترك أعضاؤه في المصالح ويتبادلون بحرية مع سائر الجماعات؛ وفصلُ التعليم «الحرّ» عن «المهني» إنما يعيد داخل المدرسة انقسام الطبقات الذي في خارجها. وكان ديوي يقول إن هذا هو الكتاب الذي عُرضت فيه فلسفته كلّها على أتمّ وجه. وهو أساس حركة التربية التقدّمية.
