صدرتا دون اسم سنة 1689، بُعيد الثورة المجيدة، وقُرئتا قرونًا على أنهما تبريرها. وقد أثبت بيتر لاسلِت سنة 1960 أنهما كُتبتا قبل ذلك، نحو 1679-1683، إبّان أزمة الإقصاء: أي أنهما تحاججان لثورة لم تقع بعد، لا لثورة تمّت. أنكر لوك نسبتهما إليه طوال حياته ولم يعترف بها إلا في وصيته.
