Context i història
Tocqueville va viatjar als Estats Units el 1831 amb l'encàrrec oficial d'estudiar-hi les presons, i el llibre que en va sortir era una altra cosa. Aquest primer volum, del 1835, és descriptiu i optimista; el segon, del 1840, és molt més abstracte i molt més fosc, i és on apareix el famós «despotisme tou» d'una societat d'iguals que s'entrega a un poder tutelar. Convé no confondre'ls ni citar-los com si fossin el mateix llibre escrit alhora.
