De què tracta

Context i història
La tesi central es que la centralitzacio administrativa —la substitucio dels poders locals per una burocracia dependent de Paris— ja estava gairebé feta abans del 1789, i que la Revolucio la va heretar i completar. D'aqui la seva observacio mes citada, i la mes inquietant: que un regim dolent corre el maxim perill quan comença a reformar-se, i que la situacio dels camperols francesos era millor que la d'altres pobles europeus que no es van revoltar. Es un dels primers llibres d'historia escrits amb documentacio d'arxiu i amb una pregunta sociologica al davant. Tocqueville va morir abans d'escriure el segon volum, sobre la Revolucio mateixa.
