De què tracta
El tractat d'Aristòtil sobre l'ànima, que no és cap esperit tancat en un cos sinó allò que fa que un cos viu sigui viu.
Context i història
La definició del llibre segon —l'ànima és l'acte primer d'un cos natural que té la vida en potència— desfà d'un cop el problema platònic de com s'ajunten dues substàncies diferents: no s'ajunten, perquè no en són dues, igual que la forma d'una destral no és una cosa separada del ferro. D'aquí surt una escala: les plantes es nodreixen i es reprodueixen, els animals a més senten i es mouen, l'home a més pensa. El llibre tercer conté el passatge sobre l'enteniment agent que va ocupar mil cinc-cents anys de comentaris, perquè Aristòtil hi diu que aquesta part és «separable, impassible i sense mescla» i no aclareix si és personal o comuna: Averrois va llegir una cosa i Tomàs una altra, i la disputa va arribar fins al Renaixement. També és el primer tractat de psicologia i de teoria de la percepció que tenim.
