Context i història
Convé saber què s'està llegint: Martineau no va traduir el Cours sencer sinó que el va reduir de sis volums a dos, retallant repeticions i reordenant l'argument. No és, doncs, l'original. Ara bé, Comte la va llegir i li va agradar tant que la va fer tornar a traduir al francès per als seus alumnes, cosa que li dona una autoritat poc corrent en una condensació. Per a qualsevol qüestió de text, però, el Cours original en francès també és al catàleg.
