De què tracta
La primera part de l'Avesta als «Sacred Books of the East»: el Vendidad, el codi de puresa i de purificacio del zoroastrisme.
Context i història
Es la part de l'Avesta que menys s'assembla a un llibre religios tal com se l'imagina un lector modern, i convé dir-ho. El Vendidad —«llei contra els dimonis»— es sobretot un tractat legal i ritual: quins contactes contaminen, com s'ha de tractar un cadaver, quines penes corresponen a cada falta, com es purifiquen la terra, l'aigua i el foc, com s'ha de cuidar un gos. El seu interes es doble: es un document juridic i social de l'Iran antic d'un detall extraordinari, i explica practiques zoroastrianes que encara existeixen. El nucli antic i religiosament central de l'Avesta son les Gathes, que son a la tercera part. La traduccio es de Darmesteter, del 1880.
