El «Bardo thödol» tibetà, un manual per acompanyar el moribund i el mort durant els quaranta-nou dies que van d'una vida a la següent.

Context i història

El títol tibetà vol dir «alliberament per l'escolta en l'estat intermedi»: el text es llegia en veu alta al costat del cos, perquè la consciència del difunt el sentís i reconegués el que anava veient. Descriu tres bardos successius, amb les llums, les divinitats pacífiques i després les irades, i repeteix a cada pas la mateixa instrucció: allò que veus és la teva pròpia ment i no t'ha de fer por. La tradició l'atribueix a Padmasambhava, al segle VIII, i el fa trobar per Karma Lingpa al segle XIV; el nom de «llibre tibetà dels morts» és de l'editor anglès Evans-Wentz, que el 1927 el va publicar amb un pròleg teosòfic i unes notes que hi projecten idees que el text no diu. Jung hi va escriure després un comentari psicològic influent, i també aquest hi porta el seu propi vocabulari. El que hi ha aquí és un text litúrgic budista, no un tractat sobre la mort en general.
