De què tracta
L'esbos primerenc del sistema de Spinoza, escrit cap al 1660 i perdut durant dos segles: la mateixa filosofia de l'«Etica» abans que prengués forma geometrica.
Context i història
Spinoza no el va publicar mai i el text nomes es coneix per dues copies manuscrites en holandès descobertes al segle XIX; l'original llati s'ha perdut. Aixo el fa doblement interessant. Primer, perque hi son ja les tesis centrals —Deu com a unica substancia, la ment i el cos com dos aspectes d'una mateixa cosa, la llibertat com a coneixement de la necessitat— pero exposades en prosa corrent, amb dialegs i digressions, i per tant molt mes accessibles que a l'«Etica». Segon, perque permet veure com va arribar-hi: hi ha rastres de Descartes que despres desapareixerien. Convé llegir-lo com el que es, un esbos de joventut que l'autor va decidir no publicar, i no com la seva paraula definitiva.

The Short Treatise, though by no means free from difficulties, is well adapted for the pur pose. It contains the essentials of Spinoza's philosophy in a less exacting form than the Ethics with its rigid geometric method. The Short Treatise cannot, of course, take the place of the Ethicsy but it prepares the way for a much easier and more profitable study of it than is otherwise possible. The Introduction and the Commentary provide all the help that the reader is likely to require.
