Context i història
Ciceró les va escriure el 45 aC, l'any que se li va morir la filla Tullia. Això no és una anècdota biogràfica: el llibre pregunta si la filosofia serveix de res quan la desgràcia ja ha arribat, i el pregunta algú que ho estava provant. Recull arguments estoics, epicuris i acadèmics sense ser d'escola, i és una de les vies per les quals la filosofia grega va arribar a Occident en llatí, amb el vocabulari que Ciceró va haver d'inventar per traduir-la.
