De què tracta
El llibre del 1874 que va tornar a posar la questio de que distingeix el mental del fisic, i que va donar a la filosofia posterior la nocio d'intencionalitat.
Context i història
La tesi central es breu i ha resultat enormement fecunda: tot fenomen mental es «d'alguna cosa». No hi ha un veure que no vegi res, ni un desitjar sense desitjat; l'objecte hi es contingut d'una manera que Brentano en deia intencional, i que no exigeix que existeixi realment —es pot temer una cosa que no hi es. Cap fenomen fisic no te aixo, i per aixo la nota serveix per distingir els dos ambits. Brentano volia una psicologia empirica pero no experimental de laboratori, feta amb la descripcio acurada del que es dona. Husserl va ser alumne seu i en va sortir la fenomenologia; tambe hi van passar Meinong, Twardowski i, un temps, Freud.
