Context i història
«Minute philosopher» es una punxada: els que empetiteixen les coses grans. Els interlocutors, Alcifron i Lisicles, sostenen les posicions de Shaftesbury i de Mandeville, i Berkeley les respon una per una. El dialeg quart conte el seu argument mes conegut, el del llenguatge visual: veure es interpretar uns signes que no s'assemblen al que signifiquen, com les paraules, i per tant la natura sencera es un discurs. El seté es una teoria del significat que s'avanca molt al segle XX: hi ha paraules que no funcionen evocant idees sino regulant conducta. Es va escriure a Rhode Island, mentre esperava uns diners que mai no van arribar per fundar una universitat a les Bermudes.

This work Is an illuftrious proof of thofc talents, and may be confidered as a ftore-houfe, whence many fucceeding writers have drawn their materials, and their arguments. The Minute Philofopher coniifls of a feries of dialogues, involving moil of the important topics in the debate between Chriftians and Infidels ; the principal arguments by which Chriftianity is defended, and the principal objections with which it has been oppoi'ed. The reafoning is clear, found, and conclufive ; and has never been anfwered. The characters of the difputants are well chofen, and ably fupported ; and their converfation is fpirited and natural.
