Context i història
Sermons defensant que la submissió al sobirà és una obligació sense excepcions. És el text seu més incòmode i el que li va costar la carrera durant anys, perquè el van llegir com a jacobita. Hi ha, però, una peça filosòfica de pes: una de les primeres formulacions de l'utilitarisme de regles.
