Context i història
El titol frances es «Matiere et memoire». L'estrategia es astuta: en comptes de discutir en abstracte si l'esperit es material, Bergson agafa el fenomen on el problema es toca amb el dit, i distingeix dues memories que se solen confondre. Una es l'habit —saber una lliçó de cor, que es una disposicio del cos—; l'altra es el record d'un moment unic i datat, que no s'emmagatzema al cervell com un fitxer. D'aqui la seva tesi que el cervell no conte els records sino que els selecciona per a l'accio present. La imatge del con invertit, on el passat sencer es contreu cap al punt del present, es una de les mes citades de la filosofia moderna.
