Publicat entre el 1864 i el 1867. Aquí és on apareix per primera vegada l'expressió «survival of the fittest», que Spencer va encunyar després de llegir Darwin. Darwin la va acabar adoptant a la cinquena edició de L'origen de les espècies, i des d'aleshores se li atribueix a ell; és de Spencer. La resta del llibre depèn d'un mecanisme d'herència que resultaria fals, i per això es llegeix més com a document que com a biologia.
