De què tracta
L'apologia del cristianisme que Grotius va escriure a la preso, primer en vers holandes per als mariners del seu pais, i despres refeta en llati.
Context i història
El titol llati es «De veritate religionis Christianae», del 1627. La intencio original era practica: donar als mariners holandesos arguments per parlar amb musulmans i amb pagans als llocs on comerciaven. D'aqui ve el to, que no es escolastic sino net i ordenat, i el metode, que no parteix de l'autoritat de l'Esglesia sino del que un interlocutor que no la reconegui podria admetre. Va ser el manual d'apologetica mes tradüit d'Europa durant dos segles —hi ha versions a l'arab, al persa, al xines— precisament perque estava pensat per a qui no compartia la premissa. Grotius es mes conegut per «De iure belli ac pacis», i les dues obres tenen el mateix habit mental.
