Un sabater de Görlitz sense estudis escriu, a partir d'una experiència que va tenir mirant un reflex en un plat d'estany, una mística on Déu conté el fosc i el clar alhora. Aquest recull és el més accessible del seu corpus. Hegel el va anomenar «el primer filòsof alemany»; els luterans ortodoxos el van prohibir.
