Context i història
Imprès el 1780 i publicat el 1789. Comença amb la frase de la natura que ha posat l'home sota dos amos sobirans, el dolor i el plaer, i d'aquí deriva tot: el «calcul felicific» que mesura intensitat, durada, certesa i abast; la classificacio dels delictes; i la idea que el castig nomes es justifica si evita mes mal del que causa. La nota sobre els animals —la questio no es si poden raonar ni si poden parlar, sino si poden patir— es l'origen de l'argument etic modern sobre els animals. Mill en va sortir, i despres se'n va apartar.
