Les lliçons que Fichte va donar a Berlin l'hivern del 1804-1805 sobre en quin moment de la historia vivim: «Els trets fonamentals de l'epoca present».
Context i història
Fichte divideix la historia humana en cinc edats segons la relacio amb la rao: la de la rao com a instint, la de l'autoritat externa, la de l'alliberament de tota autoritat —que es on situa el seu propi temps—, la de la ciencia i la de l'art de viure segons la rao. Anomena la tercera «l'estat de la pecaminositat consumada», i es el nucli de la seva critica: una epoca que ha destruit tota autoritat sense haver arribat encara a cap coneixement propi, i que per tant no creu res. Son conferencies publiques i s'entenen sense haver llegit la «Doctrina de la ciencia», que es tot un altre nivell de dificultat. Tres anys despues vindrien els «Discursos a la nacio alemanya», tambe al corpus.
