Context i història
Es van publicar anònimament el 1689, just després de la Revolució Gloriosa, i durant segles es van llegir com la seva justificació. Peter Laslett va demostrar el 1960 que s'havien escrit abans, cap al 1679-1683, durant la crisi de l'exclusió: no justificaven una revolució feta sinó que n'argumentaven una de pendent. Locke va negar l'autoria tota la vida i només la va reconèixer al testament.
