Context i història
Publicat el 1848, va ser el manual d'economia de tota una generació. La distinció que el fa important és entre les lleis de la producció, que Mill considera naturals, i les de la distribució, que considera institucions humanes i per tant modificables: aquesta separació és la porta per on entra tota la discussió posterior sobre reforma. Ell mateix va anar reescrivint les edicions en un sentit cada cop més favorable al socialisme, i és útil saber quina edició es té a la mà.
