Un examen de per què ens equivoquem —els sentits, la imaginació, les passions, les inclinacions— i, a partir d'aquí, la seva pròpia metafísica: veiem totes les coses en Déu, i cap cos no és mai la causa real del que li passa a un altre.
Context i història
Publicat el 1674-75. Aquesta edició hi porta a més el Tractat de la naturalesa i de la gràcia. Malebranche parteix de Descartes i acaba en un lloc molt diferent: l'ocasionalisme, on el que anomenem causes són només ocasions perquè Déu actuï. La conseqüència és radical i és el que li van discutir Arnauld i Leibniz —si Déu ho fa tot, què queda de nosaltres.
