Shaftesbury hi defensa que tenim un sentit moral, una capacitat de percebre el bé i el mal semblant al gust estètic, i que la virtut no necessita ni el càstig diví ni el càlcul de l'interès. El llibre va fer escola a Escòcia: Hutcheson i Hume en surten, i Kant hi discuteix.
