El primer llibre de Reid, del 1764, i el mes directe: un examen dels cinc sentits per mostrar que la percepcio no funciona com deia la filosofia rebuda.
Context i història
Reid explica al comenc que llegint Hume va veure que les seves conclusions se seguien correctament d'una premissa que tothom acceptava, i que per tant la premissa havia de ser falsa. Aquest llibre es la demostracio del cas per casos concrets: dedica un capitol a l'olfacte, un al gust, un a l'oida, un al tacte i quatre a la vista, i en cada un mostra que la sensacio i la percepcio no son la mateixa cosa, i que el que percebem no son idees sino objectes. L'analisi de la vista i de la percepcio de la distancia va influir la psicologia experimental posterior. Les dues obres mes extenses de Reid —els «Poders intel·lectuals» i els «Poders actius»— son al corpus i venen despres.
