De què tracta
El volum bessó de l'anterior, del 1788: si aquell tractava del coneixer, aquest tracta de l'obrar, i es on Reid exposa la seva teoria de la llibertat i de la moral.
Context i història
L'argument central sobre la llibertat es el de la «causalitat de l'agent»: una accio no es causada per un desig anterior com una bola en topa una altra, sino que hi ha un agent que la causa, i aquesta es una manera de causar diferent de la fisica. Reid defensa que sense aixo no te sentit tenir ningu per responsable. La part moral sosté que els principis del deure son evidents per si mateixos, com els del sentit comu en el coneixement, i s'oposa explicitament a Hume: la rao no es esclava de les passions, i el que esta be no es el que ens agrada. Els dos volums de Reid es van escriure per anar junts, i llegir-ne un sol es veure'n nomes la meitat.
