De què tracta
El primer volum del llibre del 1793 amb què Godwin va fundar, sense fer servir la paraula, l'anarquisme filosofic: la tesi que el govern es sempre un mal, encara que de moment sigui necessari.
Context i història
L'argument es racionalista fins a l'extrem: si els homes son perfectibles per la rao, tota institucio que els obligui a obeir en comptes de convèncer-los els atura. D'aqui la seva critica no nomes de l'Estat sino tambe de la propietat acumulada, de les promeses i fins i tot del matrimoni, en tant que compromisos que lliguen el judici futur. El llibre va sortir en plena reaccio britanica contra la Revolucio francesa i es va salvar de la censura, diu la llegenda, perque costava tres guinees i el govern va decidir que ningu que pogues pagar-les era perillos. Va influir Shelley —que va acabar sent el seu gendre—, i la seva dona era Mary Wollstonecraft, que tambe es al corpus.
