De què tracta
El segon volum de l'obra on Godwin sosté que el govern és un mal necessari només mentre duri la ignorància, i que la coacció, la propietat i fins i tot la promesa acaben sobrant si la raó s'estén.
Context i història
Publicat el 1793, en plena reacció britànica contra la Revolució Francesa; Godwin es va salvar del processament, es diu, perquè el llibre era massa car per arribar al públic que preocupava el govern. Hi ha un detall d'edició que importa: en va treure una segona edició el 1796 i una tercera el 1798, i les va anar suavitzant. Les posicions més extremes són a la primera, i per això qui el citi hauria de dir sempre quina edició llegeix.
