Das ägyptische „Totenbuch“ in der Fassung des Papyrus des Ani, aus dem 13. Jahrhundert v. Chr.: die Sammlung von Sprüchen, die den Toten durch die andere Welt begleiten sollten.
Kontext und Geschichte
Der Titel stammt von neuzeitlichen Ägyptologen; die Ägypter nannten es „Buch vom Herausgehen am Tage“. Es ist weder ein einzelnes Buch noch eine heilige Schrift mit festem Wortlaut, sondern ein Vorrat von gut zweihundert Sprüchen, aus denen jeder Papyrus eine Auswahl abschreibt, bestellt und bezahlt nach den Mitteln des Verstorbenen. Der des Ani, eines Schreibers aus Theben, gehört zu den längsten und am besten bebilderten, die erhalten sind. Das mittlere Kapitel ist das 125., das Gericht: das Herz des Toten wird gegen die Feder der Maat gewogen, und dort spricht er das „negative Sündenbekenntnis“, die Liste dessen, was er nicht getan hat. Wallis Budges Übersetzung von 1895 hat den Text im Westen verbreitet und ist längst überholt: sie taugt als geschichtliches Zeugnis ihrer Zeit, nicht als heutige Philologie.
