Kontext und Geschichte
„Minute philosopher“ ist ein Stich: die, welche das Große klein machen. Die Redner Alkiphron und Lysikles vertreten die Stellungen Shaftesburys und Mandevilles, und Berkeley beantwortet sie eine nach der andern. Das vierte Gespräch enthält sein bekanntestes Argument, das der Sehsprache: sehen heißt Zeichen deuten, die dem, was sie bezeichnen, nicht ähneln, so wenig wie es die Wörter tun; mithin ist die ganze Natur eine Rede. Das siebente ist eine Bedeutungslehre, die dem 20. Jahrhundert weit vorgreift: manche Wörter wirken nicht dadurch, dass sie Vorstellungen hervorrufen, sondern dadurch, dass sie das Verhalten regeln. Geschrieben wurde es auf Rhode Island, während er auf Geld wartete, das nie eintraf, um auf den Bermudas eine Hochschule zu gründen.

The reafoning is clear, found, and conclufive ; and has never been anfwered. The characters of the difputants are well chofen, and ably fupported ; and their converfation is fpirited and natural.
