Die Vorlesungen, die Fichte im Winter 1804/05 in Berlin darüber hielt, in welchem Augenblick der Geschichte wir leben: „Die Grundzüge des gegenwärtigen Zeitalters“.
Kontext und Geschichte
Fichte teilt die Geschichte der Menschheit in fünf Zeitalter nach ihrem Verhältnis zur Vernunft: die Vernunft als Instinkt, die äußere Autorität, die Befreiung von aller Autorität — hier setzt er seine eigene Zeit an —, die Wissenschaft und die Kunst, nach der Vernunft zu leben. Das dritte nennt er den „Stand der vollendeten Sündhaftigkeit“, und darin liegt der Kern seiner Kritik: ein Zeitalter, das alle Autorität zerstört hat, ohne zu eigener Erkenntnis gelangt zu sein, und das darum nichts glaubt. Es sind öffentliche Vorträge, und man folgt ihnen, ohne die „Wissenschaftslehre“ gelesen zu haben, die von ganz anderer Schwierigkeit ist. Drei Jahre später sollten die „Reden an die deutsche Nation“ folgen, die ebenfalls im Korpus stehen.
